Karl S. Spiker

Karl Spiker has been with Joyner Law since 2018 and was made Partner after seven years with the firm. He focuses his practice primarily on traffic and reckless driving defense, with serious traffic and criminal work alongside it.

Karl is originally from Redwood City, California, where he attended the University of California, Santa Cruz and earned a Bachelor of Arts in History with a second major in Music. After college, he completed an Associates in Paralegal Studies at De Anza College and worked as a paralegal in California before deciding to pursue law. He then moved to Virginia to attend William & Mary Law School, where he served as President of the Criminal Law Society and interned in both the Williamsburg and Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney offices — experience on the prosecution side that shapes how he approaches defense work today. He was admitted to practice in Virginia in 2018 and was recognized as a Super Lawyer in 2025.

Inside the firm, Karl is the traffic and reckless driving specialist. He played a significant role in developing the firm’s playbook for defending a reckless charge in Virginia — the shared approach all the attorneys draw on — and he’s the one who continues to build on it, drives it forward, and keeps it sharp. The work isn’t just tracking changes to the law. It’s tracking what’s working in court right now. For out-of-state drivers, Karl also tracks what a Virginia conviction does back home: license, insurance, record. That kind of depth changes what you see in a case — which facts the prosecutor will push on, which judges will weigh which factors, and the variables outside the courtroom or outside Virginia that quietly shape how the case actually lands.

His practice style is the firm’s practice style in concentrated form. Detail-oriented, process-driven, and relentlessly prepared. He works hard, knows the file cold, and maintains genuinely strong working relationships with the prosecutors, judges, and other defense attorneys he sees in court week after week. Those relationships are part of why his cases resolve the way they do — prosecutors and judges who deal with him regularly know he’ll be ready, know he won’t waste their time, and know he won’t oversell a case.

Alongside his case work, Karl leads the firm’s Operations team. That role isn’t a recent assignment — looking for ways to make the firm run better has been part of how he’s worked since he joined in 2018. The partnership came after seven years of doing both: handling his own caseload at a high level and steadily improving the systems the rest of the firm depends on.

The consultation is free, and the point of it isn’t to sell you on hiring us. It’s to talk through what you’re facing, give you an honest read on the case, and figure out — both of us — whether we’re the right firm for it. Either way, you’ll walk away knowing more about what you’re up against than when you called.
